Private tour of the West Bank of the Nile in Luxor. Contact from guide Sayed Gamal the night before trip was reassuring giving us options to change our pickup time if necessary. Sayed contacted us when he had arrived in hotel lobby and greeted us with a great smile before taking us to very new and pristine air-con vehicle with smart welcoming driver. On our first drive to the valley of the kings Sayed explained the general importance of Luxor in the ancient times and the significance of Luxor and Karnak temples and the tombs we would visit on the tour. Sayed was also helpful in helping us select the right tickets to buy for extra tombs to visit above the standard three available with entry ticket supplied. We decided to plump for the most expensive SETI 1 at 2000 Egyptian pounds each. It proved a great choice and well worth the money. Sayed was a very knowledgeable and experienced guide throughout. He took our pictures whenever asked. Guides are not able to join visitors in the tombs, but Sayed always described the highlights we should look out for before our entry. This was particularly important when he took us to Hatshepsut temple when he pointed out the blank walls where the Queen’s image had been erased by her stepson who came back from the army to claim his rightful throne. The next visit to the valley and tombs of the workers was made very interesting by Sayed as he took time to explain how and why the workers who built and decorated the tombs of the pharaohs were separated from normal civilisation, paid no wages, and practiced skills like stonemasonary and decoration from generation to generation. The final visit to the small but fabulously decorated tombs of workers was an awe inspiring experience, not to be missed. Sayed explained the descent would be steep and narrow, but well worth the effort. And so it proved. Thankyou Sayed for making our private tour to the east bank so rewarding. We enjoyed it immensely. Must not forget also we enjoyed our Egyptian lunch at the Paris Restaurant beside the green fields of the West Bank. Chicken or beef with all manner of home-grown vegetables and rice. Delicious end to a gorgeous private trip by John and Vicki
