We met out guide in Alexandria. She hops in the van and says “Hi, I I’m Shaima” then turns back around. That’s it. No introduction, nothing. Next, we stop at an outdoor restaurant on the water and she tells us we’re going to get a drink. We all order. We sit at the table sipping our drinks in silence. She doesn’t say one word to us. Not “where are you all from?” “This is what we’re going to see on the tour today.” Nothing. Zip. Nada. It was so awkwardly uncomfortable. Then she suggests we go take a group photo by the water, um, okay. Then back to the van. Silence. We stop at a bridge and get out. She tells us it was built in 2002. That’s it. “Let’s take a group pic.” SERIOUSLY? What is the historical significance of this bridge? Are we just stopping for a photo op? At this point, the 6 guests are starting to look at each other and mumble under our breath like what the heck is going on?? Off we go to the Alexandria Library, the largest in the world. We’re hopeful that this could be a cool visit. She leads us to a courtyard and shows us a statue of some guy’s head. Not sure who he was, maybe the guy that designed the library? Unclear. The guide walked very slow and half the time just seemed to be wandering, like she was window shopping and I’m like DO I NEED TO LEAD THIS TOUR?? She takes us into the lower level of the library which is some type of exhibit. We’re walking by art work, pottery, etc and she tells us nothing. Then we go into the exhibit of Anwar El-Sadat and she tells us a bit about his history and assassination. We blast through it and then go back to the van. We didn’t even get to go into the main library and see anything!! Two of the guests left the tour at this point as their whole reason for joining was to do some research at the library. They met back up with us at the end. This is how the whole trip went. It was like we had to pry info out of her when she was supposed to be the historian. Each place we stopped she would maybe tell us one or two facts. I began to wonder if she was a certified guide! We were all so irritated. Around 3 PM she asked us if we wanted to have lunch but by that point we all just wanted the tour to get over so we wanted to finish the last few stops before eating. After lunch we headed back to Cairo where we dropped her off about halfway. She just got out of the front seat and said, “I’ll say goodbye”, shut her door and left. Most guides would have opened the van slider to say goodbye, thank us for joining the tour. We felt it was a hugely wasted day.

We took a day trip from Alexandria to El Alamein in order to pay respects to a family member killed at Alamein in the Second World War and now at the WW2 Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery. We booked with Ramasside Tours who provided us with an excellent guide, Mohamed, together with driver Ahmed who took us by private car to this site from Alexandria. Nothing was too much trouble, Mohamed's knowledge of not just the cemeteries in the area but of Alexandria and the El Alamein area were phenomenol. Both guide and driver were completely respectful of the purpose of our visit. Following the visit, they took us back to Alexandria for lunch overlooking the sea. The visit was a memorable one and made doubly so by the efficiency, care and attention paid to three not-so-young ladies travelling in a foreign land. They made the experience seamless. Thank you team for a magical day, despite the solemn purpose. We will not forget.

We really liked that it was a small group. Walid did an amazing job. He was able to share a lot of information and shared both current information and past history. It was obvious he knew and loved his country’s history. He was practical in what we saw and when we saw it. He knew the catacombs is extra busy in the morning, so we went in the afternoon. Water was provided all day and we were taken care of well.
