The Alexandria Experience

We had a an excellent drive from Cairo to Alexandria where we met our guide, Sherihan El Shorbagy (Sheri) for a day tour Alexandria. Our tour started with a visit to the Roman Amphitheatre of Alexandra. Sheri gave us an interesting yet well measured account of the Site. The Echo chamber was particularly fascinating. Thereafter we visited the church of St Mark taking us into the holy burial Chamber. There after we had a guided tour of Abbo Elabbas Mosque. After Mosque, we had lunch at a modern fish restaurant. Exquisite. Thereafter we went to the Citadel, wonderful fortress. The briefing by the tour guide by Sheri was excellent - well informed and appropriately measured. Thereafter we the Library of Alexandria which was impressive and deserved its title of he biggest library in the world. The hotel booked for us, the Sunrise Hotel, was well located. T

Full overview of key sights in Cairo.

We saw everything on the advertised list: beautiful Coptic church with lots of added police security since the 2017 attack; catacombs with much history; lovely mosque; new, modern Bibliotheca providing antiquity research, and more. It was all very interesting. I thought the catacombs and library were especially great - the very old and the very new! The reason for my reduced rating has to do with the guide. 1) the trip was listed as 7-8 hours. We were shuttled back after 6, maybe 6.5 hours. They were headed to airport next. Maybe didn't have more time for us? 2) While Kareem seemed to have lots of useful information, his manner of presentation needs improvement. He kept repeating in the most dismissive, abrupt manner things like, " as i told you before..." before answering a question; and the unnecessary, "i could tell you weren't listening, so I'll tell you again." These judgmental comments were unnecessary and soured the trip experience. They are also inappropriate from a trip leader to clients. Frankly, he was asked to slow down at least twice by another guest. Since i was trying to take notes, i could not write and take it all in so quickly. But, he did not slow down his talk.

Worth the trip.

Shery our tour guide was knowledgeable and helpful. We travelled with our one year old son and she checked in with us often to see if we were comfortable. Our driver, Muhammad was amazing. He played with our son and was friendly. On our way to Alexandria we experienced a punctured tyre. He got on it fast and tried to fix it asap so that we could make it in time for the itenarary of the day.
