Riveria Travel Experience Pros and Cons
Pros
Last October we went on the two week Nile cruise on Movenpick. We had a lovely cabin and it was very comfortable aboard and the restaurant food was excellent.
Cons
There was a gift shop /Bazar on the boat. The man who ran it said that he was able to post postcards so I wrote half a dozen and paid him 200 Egyptian pounds to post each one. Not one of them got delivered. Grrrrrr!
Tipping is optional but let’s say, it’s encouraged. Are tourists taken for useful idiots and being duped? Could it be that staff employed by Riveria Travel and Movenpick are not being properly paid? Almost everyone involved is on the list, the airport meeters and greeters, the coach drivers, the boat crew, the luggage loaders, the on-board cleaners, the restaurant staff, the bar staff and the tour guides.
While it is discretionary, it was suggested by our tour guides that we tip £5 per day for our guide and £1 per person per day for everyone else. We did tip generously, however, a widely travelled friend of mine told me that he only tips the people who clean his room and wait at his table.
My wife contracted hepatitis A and hepatitis E. What a pity we were not advised to get vaccinated beforehand….

Wonderful Egypt immersion
Our cruise and tour was with the excellent guide Hady Ahmed with Imperial Egypt. The company and Hady were great to work with. Communication and expectations were clearly outlined. They provided a hassle free Egypt experience on a beautiful boat. Hady was very knowledgeable and a great storyteller regarding the history of Egypt. And entertaining. Food was good and plentiful. Sites and opportunities fit exactly the budget and travel expectations. The package was the highlight of the trip.

Fast Moving Nile River Cruise Keeps you On your Toes
A Nile River cruise is a great way to see Egypt’s antiquities, especially if you want a structured, social experience. The boats are relatively intimate (around 90 passengers), and they assign you dinner companions, so you naturally get to know people over the trip. It’s an affordable and easy way to travel between sites.
Our guide, Talat, was excellent—very knowledgeable and did a great job managing our group of 24. That said, the pace is intense. Expect very early mornings (4:00 a.m. wake-ups most days), and the 3–4 day itinerary feels rushed. You do cover a lot, but it can feel like you’re constantly moving.
A few trade-offs to be aware of:
- The food onboard was average
- Actual time cruising the Nile is shorter than expected (you don’t even leave port until day 2)
- Many boats travel together, so you’ll arrive at temples with large crowds and spend a lot of time near other ships
Despite that, having a comfortable place to come back to each day and relax does balance things out. Sunbathing atop the boat and even morning yoga on the last day was devine. Overall, it’s a convenient way to see a lot in a short time—just go in knowing it’s more about efficiency than a slow, scenic cruise.
