The Library quickly acquired many papyrus scrolls, due largely to the Ptolemaic kings' aggressive and well-funded policies for procuring texts. It is unknown precisely how many such scrolls were housed at any given time, but estimates range from 40,000 to 400,000 at its height. Please note that it is closed on Friday.

Very informative day and comfortable driving

I highly recommend this tour of Alexandria. My guide was Manal Atef who was very well informed, and able to answer all of my many questions. We saw Pompeii’s Pillar, the new library, the fortress as well as the catacombs, which I found particularly interesting. Thank you so much for a really enjoyable day, Manal!

Good day in Alexandria!

Abdo Ragab provided us a great experience in Alexandria. He treated us like family - kept us hydrated, recommended great places to see and eat, took great pictures of us, and even taught us a little Arabic! Alexandria itself has a lot of construction going on, so I would wait until it’s done to really experience the beauty of the city. I recommend not coming to Egypt in summer, it’s too hot, and bringing a swimsuit!
