Amazing felucca experience from Aswan to Daraw (2 nights)
We (3 of us) went on a felucca with Ahmed and Waleed sailing up the Nile for 2 nights (Aswan to Daraw), and then a private transfer to Luxor via Edfu temple. The first day was a full day of gentle zig-zagging along the Nile, which was very relaxing and a great opportunity to just enjoy being on the river. A highlight was stopping in Daraw village on the second day - Ahmed joined us, took us to the camel market (although sadly there were no camels as there's been a shortage of them coming up from Sudan), through the souq, for a delicious coffee, and even helped us organise a shave at one of the barbershops. The felucca was really comfortable. We each got our own mosquito nets and plenty of blankets to keep warm during the cold nights. They close up the sides of the felucca at night to help keep it warm. Ahmed was an amazing cook - every meal was delicious and he made sure we got to try authentic Nubian cuisine. Waleed was an excellent sailor and navigated the river expertly. Together they kept us on track even when the wind died down, or when it picked up and was too strong! You can tell that both of them absolutely love what they do. Would love to come back and do it again with more friends. Top tip: we booked through Viator but I would book direct next time.

Erstaunliche Feluca-Erfahrung von Assuan nach Daraw
Wir (3 von uns) fuhren mit Ahmed und Waleed für 2 Nächte den Nil hinauf (Aswan nach Daraw) und dann einen privaten Transfer nach Luxor über den Edfu-Tempel. Der erste Tag war ein ganzer Tag mit sanftem Zickzack entlang des Nils, was sehr entspannend war und eine tolle Gelegenheit, einfach am Fluss zu sein. Ein Highlight war der Halt im Dorf Daraw am zweiten Tag - Ahmed kam zu uns, nahm uns mit zum Kamelmarkt (obwohl es leider keine Kamele gab, da es an ihnen aus dem Sudan gemangelt hat) , durch den Souq, für einen leckeren Kaffee, und half uns sogar eine Rasur in einem der Friseurläden zu organisieren. Die Feluca war wirklich komfortabel. Wir bekamen alle unsere eigenen Moskitonetze und jede Menge Decken, um in den kalten Nächten warm zu halten. Sie schließen die Seiten der Feluca nachts, um sie warm zu halten. Ahmed war ein erstaunlicher Koch - jede Mahlzeit war köstlich und er sorgte dafür, dass wir authentische nubische Küche probieren konnten. Waleed war ein ausgezeichneter Segler und navigierte den Fluss kompetent. Gemeinsam hielten sie uns auf Kurs, auch wenn der Wind nachließ, oder als er anfing und zu stark war! Man merkt, dass beide absolut lieben, was sie tun. Würde gerne wiederkommen und es wieder mit mehr Freunden tun.

An Unforgettable Felucca Journey on the Nile
Our felucca journey with Yusri and Shaggy went far beyond anything we could have expected. The felucca itself is beautifully maintained—a charming boat, surprisingly comfortable and even equipped with a bathroom.
What truly made this experience unforgettable, though, was the crew. Yusri spoiled us with exceptional home-cooked dishes, while Shaggy expertly navigated the Nile, taking us to hidden, off-the-beaten-path places, including a truly authentic local farm.
After just a few hours, we felt like part of the family. We honestly wished we could have kept sailing with them for days.
I can’t recommend a felucca experience enough to discover the Nile in a slow, peaceful, and deeply authentic way—it’s simply unmissable.

A dream in the Nile came true!
Wij spendeerden net 2 nachten op een felucca onder leiding van Medo & Naser. We hadden ons geen lievere kapiteins kunnen voorstellen. Ze waren zo attent, zorgend, lief en leuk.
Bij aankomst kregen we een lekker ontbijt in we toffe guesthouse van JJ die ons warm verwelkomde. We kregen wat tijd om te rusten en te douchen en door het knusse dorp te wandelen.
Daarna was het feluccatijd. EEN DROOM!
We aten ontzettend lekker, namen een snelle duik in de nijl, dronken heerlijke Sudanese koffie, wandelden door Nubische dorp, bezochten de botanische tuin, genoten van de zichten op de Nubische tombes en bezochten Abu Simbel.
De kampeerplekken die ze uitkozen waren prachtig: dieren, palmbomen en rust.
Er was een kleine superschone wc/badkamer en lekker warm beddengoed.
Vraag zeker naar Naser en Medo als jij gaat zeilen bij JJ!
Mijn zoontje van 4 wilde echt niet vertrekken. Voor ons geen goodbye maar een tot weerziens!

Fantastische Felucca Reise!
Wir nahmen JJ Jamaicas Felucca für 1 Nacht von Assuan. Wir haben das im Vorfeld mit Waleed über WhatsApp organisiert und er war sehr kommunikativ.
Unsere Zeit auf der Feluca war fantastisch, es ist sauber und komfortabel, und hat sogar Badezimmer. Wir wurden mit Tee und Kaffee für uns bei der Ankunft bereit getroffen.
Die Crew war fantastisch, super freundlich, und wir fühlten uns sicher und gut betreut. Das Essen an Bord war eines der besten, das wir in Ägypten hatten; es war phänomenal und wir wurden nie während unserer Zeit auf der Feluca hungrig zurückgelassen!
Für die Nacht bekamen wir ein Moskitonetz und große warme Decken für einen bequemen Schlaf, und unsere Taschen waren sicher für uns für die Nacht verstaut.
Wir empfehlen diese Feluca-Reise entweder als Privatreise oder Gruppenreise. Sie sind zuverlässig, bieten den besten Service und ein sehr unvergessliches Erlebnis.

If you want the real Nile, this is it!
Feluccas are the best way to travel on the Nile. It’s beautiful, peaceful, and genuinely fun in a way the big cruise ships can never match.
We sailed with Captain Tarek and Chef Suliman, and they were a huge part of what made this experience unforgettable. Suliman somehow cooked incredible amounts of food in his tiny outdoor kitchen; rich, deeply flavored Egyptian dishes. At sundown, he even prepared a finely chopped fruit cocktail. On top of that, he also helped Captain Tarek with sailing and mooring. Since these elegant boats have no motors, everything depends on skill and experience, and it was lovely to see Tarek guiding and training Suliman so he can one day sail the Nile himself.
We flew into Aswan late, after spending our first full day at Giza visiting the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum. We stayed on Elephantine Island at Meshra Katto, a Nubian hotel recommended by Walid (the owner of Jamaica Felucca) since his place was fully booked. Meshra Katto was a great alternative. Beautiful setting, very quiet, a perfect breakfast on the balcony, and a short boat ride to where our felucca was waiting.
Sailing out of the harbor alongside the enormous cruise ships was eye-opening.
Sleeping at night was a little challenging. We each had mosquito-net tents (not many mosquitoes). We were warm and cosy. Perfectly fine for those who don’t mind sleeping outdoors.
There was plenty of room on the shaded, comfortable main deck. If you want to sunbathe on the upper deck, it may be one of the best places in the world to watch life along the Nile…just remember to keep your head down, this is a sailing boat, and you’re constantly crossing back and forth across the river.
What really makes this journey special is how close you get to both banks of the Nile. We saw buffalo, countless birds (kingfishers constantly diving), and the humble donkey. It’s slow, intimate travel at its finest.
Day two began peacefully with a massive breakfast and a morning sail, but then we had to moor for about two hours while cruise ships passed. It was noisy and chaotic, but also fascinating to witness: horns blaring, smoke clouds trailing behind, and unnatural waves pounding the river. The moment they passed (and Captain Tarek knows their schedules by heart), we sailed off again and had the Nile entirely to ourselves. That contrast alone confirmed we had made the right choice.
Thanks to Tarek’s timing, we also visited temples, the crocodile museum, and a quarry without crowds, which felt incredibly special. Sadly, our schedule meant we missed the camel market. If you can plan your trip to include it, I’ve heard it’s a must.
Somehow, Captain Tarek delivered us to our Edfu pickup exactly on time, and our three amazing nights ended with a visit to Edfu Temple, once again almost entirely to ourselves. A perfect ending.
This trip is ideal for anyone who values peace, authenticity, and slow travel. If you need luxury cabins, it may not be for you. If you want the real Nile, this is it.
Tips:
* Build flexibility into your schedule so Captain Tarek can avoid cruise ship crowds
* Try to include the camel market if possible
* Trust the crew—they know this river better than anyone

En uforglemmelig opplevelse
Vi reise sammen med de to guttene våre på 5 og 8 år. Dette var en stor opplevelse. Tre rolige dager med de to beste kapteinene på Nilen, Mido og Sef! Vi hadde båten for oss selv og Mido lagde den beste maten vi fikk servert i løpet av hele reisen på 28 dager i Egypt. En nydelig og stille reise med tid til lesing, refleksjon og avslapping. Vi skulle gjerne blitt på båten enda lenger. Hele familien koste seg. Et tips hvis du reiser om vinteren: ta med varme klær til natten og ørepropper. De store cruisebåtene bråker, og togene tuter om natten. Kort oppsummert en uforglemmelig opplevelse.
