The Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum in One Day — A Plan That Works

The Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum in One Day — A Plan That Works

For the first time in history, the greatest monuments of ancient Egypt and its greatest collection sit side by side. The Grand Egyptian Museum stands at the edge of the Giza plateau, just a short drive from the pyramids — which means you can see both in one full, unforgettable day.

Start early at the pyramids

Arrive as the site opens. The light is soft, the air is cool and the tour buses have not yet arrived.

  • The Great Pyramid of Khufu — the last surviving wonder of the ancient world. Going inside needs a separate ticket; the passages are narrow, steep and warm, so skip it if you dislike tight spaces.
  • The pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure — smaller, but together they make the famous skyline.
  • The panoramic viewpoint — the classic photograph of all the pyramids in a row, best in the morning.
  • The Sphinx — at the lower end of the plateau, beside the Valley Temple of Khafre.

Allow about three hours. If you want a camel or horse ride, agree the price and the route clearly before you get on.

Lunch between the two

A relaxed lunch near the plateau breaks the day well and keeps you out of the midday sun.

The Grand Egyptian Museum in the afternoon

The museum is enormous, so choose what matters most to you:

  • The Grand Staircase, lined with statues of kings and gods, with a view towards the pyramids at the top.
  • The colossal statue of Ramses II that greets you in the atrium.
  • The Tutankhamun galleries, where the young king's treasures are displayed together — the highlight for most visitors.

Give it at least three to four hours. A guide makes a big difference: the collection is vast, and a good one knows which pieces tell the best stories.

Practical tips

  • Book a tour with a guide and transport — distances in Cairo are long and traffic is unpredictable.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and a hat; the plateau is sandy and has little shade.
  • Carry water and small cash for tips and extras.
  • Check opening hours and tickets before you go, as they can change.
  • Stay for the evening if you can: the sound and light show at the pyramids is a different way to see them.

From the Red Sea?

Cairo and Giza are a long day trip from Hurghada, by road or by air. It is tiring but possible, and many visitors say it was the highlight of their holiday. If you have the time, stay a night in Cairo instead.
