From the Airport to Your Hotel: Hurghada, Cairo, Sharm and Marsa Alam
Published October 24, 2026

After a long flight, the last thing you want is to haggle with taxi drivers outside arrivals — tired, with luggage, and without knowing the fair price. Sorting the ride before you fly is one of the easiest ways to start a holiday in Egypt well.
Your options
- Hotel transfer. Many resorts offer one. Easy, but often not the cheapest, and sometimes a shared bus that stops at several hotels.
- Taxi at the airport. Always available. Agree the full price before you get in, in which currency, and whether it is per car or per person.
- Ride apps. In Cairo, and in some other cities, apps such as Uber and Careem work well and show the price up front. Check where the pick-up point is at the airport.
- A pre-booked private transfer. A driver waits in arrivals with your name, the price is fixed in advance, and the car is yours alone — the calmest option, especially at night or with children.
Airport by airport
Rough drive times without heavy traffic:
- Hurghada (HRG) — the airport is close to town: about 15–20 minutes to central Hurghada, around 30 minutes to El Gouna, Makadi Bay or Sahl Hasheesh, and longer to Soma Bay and Safaga.
- Cairo (CAI) — 45 minutes to well over an hour to downtown or Giza, depending on traffic. A fixed price matters most here.
- Sharm El Sheikh (SSH) — about 15 minutes to Naama Bay and most hotels along the coast.
- Marsa Alam (RMF) — a few minutes to Port Ghalib, but often an hour or more to resorts further south. Hotels here are far apart, so check yours on a map.
- Luxor (LXR) — about 20 minutes to East Bank hotels, a bit more to the West Bank.
- Aswan (ASW) — about 25–30 minutes to the city and the Nile.
Tips for arrival
- Keep your hotel's name and address on your phone, in English and ideally in Arabic.
- Have some small Egyptian pound notes for tips; you can change money or use a cash machine at the airport.
- If you booked a transfer, share your flight number so the driver can follow delays.
- Get internet working before you land — see our guide to internet in Egypt.
