Most of what makes a trip to Egypt smooth now happens on your phone: maps to the temple entrance, WhatsApp with your driver or hotel, ride apps in Cairo, translating a menu, showing a booking confirmation. So the question is not whether you need mobile data — it is how to get it with the least fuss.
Option 1: roaming on your home SIM
The easiest, because there is nothing to do. But Egypt is outside most European roaming packages, and outside-region data can be very expensive. Check your mobile plan before you fly, and switch data roaming off until you know.
Option 2: a local SIM card at the airport
Egypt's mobile operators — Vodafone, Orange, e& (Etisalat) and WE — have counters in the arrivals halls of the big airports, including Cairo, Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh. You will need your passport, the card is registered in your name, and you get a local number.
It works well, but it means a queue after a long flight, and your usual number goes out of use while the Egyptian SIM is in the phone.
Option 3: an eSIM installed before you fly
An eSIM is a digital SIM: you buy it online, install it with a QR code or an app while you are still at home on Wi-Fi, and it switches on when you land. No counter, no queue, and your own SIM stays in the phone — so WhatsApp and your bank's text messages keep working on your usual number.
Two things to check first:
- Your phone supports eSIM. Most iPhones since the XS, Google Pixels and recent Samsung Galaxy S and Z models do.
- Your phone is unlocked, not tied to one operator.
Most travel eSIMs are data-only. That is rarely a problem: calls and messages go through WhatsApp.
How to set it up
- Buy the Egypt plan and install it at home over Wi-Fi.
- When you land, turn on the eSIM line and allow data roaming on it.
- Set the eSIM as your mobile-data line, and keep your home SIM for calls and texts.
Our pick
For a one- or two-week holiday, an eSIM is the simplest choice for most visitors. We partner with Airalo, which has plans for Egypt that you can install before departure.
A few tips
- Download offline maps of your city in Google Maps before you go.
- Hotel Wi-Fi is often weak on the beach and in garden rooms.
- At sea — on snorkelling and island trips — there is usually little or no signal once you are offshore.
