Overview

Begin your lovely day by meeting your guide at your hotel. This full-day private tour to Alexandria will take you on a journey through the city’s ancient history. Travel in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle as your guide shares fascinating stories about Alexandria. Start with "The Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa," an underground burial site with a mix of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman styles. Visit "Pompey's Pillar," a towering Roman column, and pass by the modern "Alexandria Library," a tribute to the ancient world’s knowledge center. Explore the Citadel of Qaitbay, built on the site of the Lighthouse of Alexandria, and finish with the Roman Theater, a well-preserved piece of the city’s Roman history. • Convenient pickup from your hotel in Cairo or Giza. • Stay hydrated with bottled water provided. • Learn in-depth knowledge from a local guide. • Enjoy comfortable, air-conditioned private transportation between sites.

What you'll see

  1. Catacombs Of Kom El Shoqafa
    4 hours

At 7:00 am, we will pick you up from your hotel and head straight to Alexandria, where we will spend the next two and a half hours traveling by highway to get to our starting point "Kom El Shoqafa" in Alexandria. Kom El Shoqafa contains a collection of tombs, statues, and archaeological artifacts associated with the Pharaonic funeral mortuary cults and Hellenistic and early Imperial Roman influences. Because of the time, many of the characteristics of Kom El Shoqafa's catacombs combine Roman, Greek, and Egyptian cultural points; some statues are Egyptian in style but wear Roman clothes and hairstyles, while others share a similar style. A circular staircase descends into the tombs tunneled into the bedrock during the Antonine emperors' reign. (2nd century AD)From the 2nd to the 4th centuries, the building was used as a burial chamber before being rediscovered in 1900.

  2. Pompey's Pillar
    1 hour

It will be the secondary attraction. The Pompey Pillar's moniker is deceptive. Gaius Pompey, a Roman general, and consul, was a rival of Julius Caesar in a civil war and was assassinated by a Ptolemaic pharaoh in 48 BC as he escaped to Alexandria. This single column, perched on a rocky hilltop in the center of Alexandria, has nothing to do with him. Crusaders believed his grave was marked by a 100-foot (30-meter) red Aswan granite pillar, which is how this tale started. The pillar is a triumphal monument built for the Roman Emperor Diocletian in 300 AD. During the visit, the site will be admired from the outside only, making it an ideal stop without requiring entrance fees. The real importance of this archaeological site lies in what was before the pillar: the Serapeum, Alexandria's acropolis.

  3. Citadel of Qaitbay
    1 hour

The third stop will be this. In Alexandria, Egypt, on the Mediterranean Sea the coast, stands the 15th-century defensive fortress known as the Citadel of Qaitbay or the Fort of Qaitbay. In 1477 AD (882 AH), Sultan Al-Ashraf Sayf al-Din Qa'it Bay founded it. The Citadel is located at the mouth of the Eastern Harbour on the eastern edge of Pharos Island's northern tip.

  4. Bibliotheca Alexandrina
    3 hours

We will visit the world's largest library: "Bibliotheca Alexandrina", which currently has 8 million Books. Visit its open court to see the statues of Ptolemy the First and Alexander the Great, which were both discovered close underwater. You will go to "The President Sadat Museum" and the "Alexandria Museum of Impressions. Please note that the Alexandria Library is closed on Friday and legal holidays. You will need to buy a ticket to access the reading section. Finally, we will travel to the beginning location for around 2.5 hours on the highway.

  5. Ancient Roman Amphitheater
    1 hour

The Roman Amphitheatre is one of Alexandria's most popular monuments. This is Egypt's second most important city, after the capital, Cairo. While the amphitheaters were spread through the different countries like Greece, Italy, and Turkey during the reign of the Romans with many examples of these structures still present in many regions around Europe and the Middle East, the Roman Amphitheatre of Alexandria is the only one of

Wonderful private Alexandria tour

Shimaa is a fabulous tour guide, extremely knowledgeable, super friendly and has excellent conversational English. Nothing was too much trouble and we both really enjoyed our day sightseeing the Alexandria highlights. Shimaa took some lovely of us too. Thank you so much!

Nice one day trip

It was a nice experience. Our driver Rahim was funny. My kids said he was like a teddy bear. Islam our guide was very nice and knowledgeable. He didn't rush us and was very helpful. The city was unique and loved the views of the sea. Good time. Thanks

Perfect way to fill free day in Cairo, prior to starting our 9-day Egypt tour.

Our small group tour turned into a private tour, that happens sometimes when you use a small local tour company during the shoulder season. We were there in mid-March. Pros and cons to this free upgrade. Your time/schedule/stops become flexible and efficient. But you’re also solely responsible for reasonably tipping the driver and guide. For the tour itself, we visited 4 sites: the catacombs; the amphitheater; the library; and the castle. If you have the flexibility, pick a day/time when the first 3 are open. The castle I’d say it’s optional but you’re there already, why not. Each of the first 3 are really amazing in their own right. When you visit the amphitheater, be sure to step on the echo pedestal in front of the audience and sing (or just say) something. We chose the all inclusive option. If you added up all the entrance fees (if all 4 are open) and cost for lunch, you’re about even. If you have other considerations like many children who get bored easily and/or don’t eat much, then you need to take those factors into consideration. We thought our choice met our need well. The trip to/from Alexandria. If this is your first time on a driven trip in Egypt, brace yourself. Better yet, try to catch up on your sleep for the ~3-hour trip to and from. The only thing you’d miss is mad-max style driving (think of the skill required) and all the stress from seeing it behind the driver. Happy travels.

Fun Alexandria day trip to end our trip!

We are at the end of our 2 week trip and capped it off with a day trip to Alexandria. Boy what a great 2 weeks it’s been! Alexandria is such an interesting and beautiful city with the blended history from the Greeks, Romans and ancient Egyptians. Our guide Eslam was fantastic and knowledgeable and provided us with a lot of information we wouldn’t have known otherwise. The visit to the catacombs and the castle was my favorite! Our driver Mohamed also did a fabulous job getting us around. Would definitely recommend this tour!

Pleasant and Informative Tour. Humorous guide.

Eslam was an excellent guide, a veteran specialist for Alexandria - been doing this for 13 years. We could tell he was one of the best guides, as there were many other groups in tight quarters especially at the catacombs. Eslam’s explanations were clear, concise and detailed. Humorous too. He is very knowledgeable with chronology and facts, answered every question we had but was never long winded. We’re so glad we took this day-trip, and selected the all-inclusive option. It’s worth it. Must step on the echo pedestal at the amphitheater and sing a song, it’s amazing.

Alexandria in a whirlwind day

From the moment our polite driver picked us up at the hotel in Cairo until he dropped us back off at the end of the day, this Alexandria tour was well worth the money. Our guide for the day, Eslam,Islam, was knowledgeable, funny, and caring about teaching us about his home city of Alexandria. More than just showing us the sights (which he did well), he really wanted us to fall in love with the city and culture as much as he loves it. A great experience, and highly recommend booking with him in the future.

Unforgettable Alexandria tour with Neelah

We had an amazing one-day guided tour of Alexandria with Neelah, and it was an experience to remember! She was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the city’s history, making every site we visited come alive with fascinating stories and insights. Our tour covered the Catacombs, where Neelah explained the rich symbolism and intricate carvings, making the underground tombs even more captivating. We also visited the fort, took pictures outside the famous Alexandria Library (though it was closed), and explored the Roman Theatre. One of the most surprising facts Neelah shared was that the so-called “theatre” was actually a luxurious Roman complex for the elite, and the amphitheater functioned as a lecture hall. These details added so much depth to our experience! To top it all off, we ended the day with delicious local Mediterranean food, which was the perfect way to wrap up our adventure. Neelah’s expertise, friendly personality, and engaging storytelling made this tour truly special. If you’re visiting Alexandria, we highly recommend booking a tour with her—you won’t regret it!

A tour specifically designed for those who love history and culture! - with Eslam

Amazing history tour with Eslam!!! The company in itself was responsive and helpful with any question 24/7, they were very flexible and made sure everything was prepared in detail. We’ve tried different guided tours but this one was the one we liked the most. We were free to explore and Eslam always had an answer for every question. It was very nice having a guide we could easily communicate with and that knew so much in detail about each stop we had. One thing is having a charismatic guide but also having one that is educated within history and all the things you wish wish for in a trip was the best! Fair prices and great food to end the day with. The driver picked us up at our hotel in Giza and drove us to get food during our 2-3 hour drive. He was also very kind and attentive. All in all 10/10 day We started quite early so it’s good to bring a jacket for the early morning

Alexandria's tour

Great tour that covers Alexandria's most famous places such as its Great Library, the largest in the ancient world; Pompey's Pillar, Alexandria Ancient Roman Theater, Qaitbay Citadel, and the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages. Must go places if you’re visiting Egypt, Eslam will give you detailed explanations of these amazing historical places.
