A hammam is not a bath. It is a slow, warm ritual that softens the skin, opens the pores and scrubs away a layer you did not know you were carrying. In Hurghada it is also the best hour you can spend after a day in the desert or on a boat.

We offer four. They share the same steam room and the same black soap, and they differ in what happens next.

The four rituals

Moroccan hammam

The classic. Black olive soap is left on the skin while the steam does its work, then a kessa glove takes off the dead skin in long strokes. You leave feeling lighter than you came in. If you have never had a hammam, start here.

Turkish hammam

The same steam, a firmer scrub, and a thick olive-oil foam massage over a warm marble slab. It is the more theatrical of the two — and the one people book again.

Cleopatra bath

Milk and honey instead of a hard scrub. Gentler on the skin, and the one to choose if you have had too much sun, which in Hurghada is most people by day three.

VIP hammam

A private room, a longer session and no sharing the space with anyone. Worth the difference if you are travelling as a couple or simply do not want company.

What actually happens

You are collected from your hotel — the transfer is included both ways. At the spa you change, and you are given a towel and slippers. The session runs about 45 minutes to an hour in the steam and scrub rooms, and there is a relaxation lounge with tea afterwards. Nobody rushes you out.

Bring nothing. Everything you need is there.

A few honest notes

• A hammam is warm and humid by design. If you have a heart condition, low blood pressure, or you are pregnant, ask your doctor first and tell us when you book.
• The scrub is thorough. It is not painful, but it is not a gentle spa facial either — that is rather the point.
• Avoid shaving the same day. Freshly shaved skin and a scrub glove do not get along.
